Well, I made it through another year in Second Life! My original avatar is officially 16 years old. I would’ve never predicted reaching this milestone in 2008 when I joined as an alternative means of networking. I found this virtual space during a rough time and wanted to connect with people who wouldn’t judge my real life predicament.
Not sure I ever mentioned what really sold me on Second Life, but it was actually learning how to fly. Finally having the ability to feel free as a bird — at least virtually — was liberating. I was no longer confined to the tiny walls of my apartment as I explored this vast world of wonders and met people from around the globe.
In fact, if it wasn’t for the friends I made over the years, I doubt I would’ve lasted this long. There were brief periods where I thought I might have to leave again, but I’m thankful I didn’t. I created more friendships and accomplished things that remind me I’m not done with this world yet. I feel so grateful for the virtual life I’ve built myself.
